Text:
WIDESPREAD WAS THE SYMPATHY at St Just, on Saturday, when it became known that sad and un- expected intelligence had come by South African mail of the death of Captain Benjamin Rowe at Johannesburg. Captain Rowe had been in the country two years and eight months. About three months since he was laid down with fever. But with good medical treatment and nursing he had so far recovered as to be able to resume his employment as underground manager of the Balmoral mine, where he had gained the esteem of all. Sad to relate, however, Capt Rowe was not able entirely to shake off the results of the fever; and, on Tuesday, March 15th, he returned from the mine and complained to Mr Benjamin Nicholas, who was employed under him, that he did not feel well. Nothing serious, however, was thought of, and Capt Rowe retired to rest. The next morning (Wednesday 16th) young Nicholas went to see him when, to his surprise, he saw that life fast ebbed. Five minutes later and Capt Rowe peacefully passed away, at the age of 49. Deceased was buried, March 17th, when all the employees of the mine and large numbers from the adjoining mines attended the funeral. They thus showed their last respect for one who was liked by all who knew him. Deceased was agent, for 18 years, at Wheal Owles, St Just, and for seven years in Botallack. When the latter ceased work, about three years since, Capt Rowe left for South Africa, where he was soon put in the honourable position of underground manager of the Balmoral mine. Deceased, who was formerly of Botallack, for years took an active part in the Wesleyan Sunday-school of that place, having held the office of secretary for several years. He has sent dona- tions from time to time to aid the work of the school; and, only a few weeks since, sent one pound toward the renovation of the chapel at that place. It seems, humanly speaking, sad that such good men are removed from us. But we must submit to the will of the Almighty. One good man has said of the All-wise being, 'Tis a mercy that when He intends Of trials to give us a share, 'Tis a mercy, indeed, that He sends No more than He helps us to bear. By his demise a wife mourns the loss of an affectionate husband and 10 children (two of whom were by his first wife) a loving and kind father. Capt Ben Rowe also leaves three brothers. For all much sympathy is felt. His end was peace. Far away in distant lands, There they laid his down to rest, Strangers soothed his dying bed, Crossed his arms upon his breast. Ah! his gentle spirit's fled Where his loving Saviour waits: In the place He has prepared, Safe within the pearly gates.
