WIDESPREAD WAS THE SYMPATHY at St Just, on Saturday, when it became known that sad and un- expected intelligence had come by South African mail of the death of Captain Benjamin Rowe at Johannesburg. Captain Rowe had been in the country two years and eight months. About three months since he was laid down with fever. But with good medical treatment and nursing he had so far recovered as to be able to resume his employment as underground manager of the Balmoral mine, where he had gained the esteem of all. Sad to relate, however, Capt Rowe was not able entirely to shake off the results of the fever; and, on Tuesday, March 15th, he returned from the mine and complained to Mr Benjamin Nicholas, who was employed under him, that he did not feel well. Nothing serious, however, was thought of, and Capt Rowe retired to rest. The next morning (Wednesday 16th) young Nicholas went to see him when, to his surprise, he saw that life fast ebbed. Five minutes later and Capt Rowe peacefully passed away, at the age of 49. Deceased was buried, March 17th, when all the employees of the mine and large numbers from the adjoining mines attended the funeral. They thus showed their last respect for one who was liked by all who knew him. Deceased was agent, for 18 years, at Wheal Owles, St Just, and for seven years in Botallack. When the latter ceased work, about three years since, Capt Rowe left for South Africa, where he was soon put in the honourable position of underground manager of the Balmoral mine. Deceased, who was formerly of Botallack, for years took an active part in the Wesleyan Sunday-school of that place, having held the office of secretary for several years. He has sent dona- tions from time to time to aid the work of the school; and, only a few weeks since, sent one pound toward the renovation of the chapel at that place. It seems, humanly speaking, sad that such good men are removed from us. But we must submit to the will of the Almighty. One good man has said of the All-wise being, 'Tis a mercy that when He intends Of trials to give us a share, 'Tis a mercy, indeed, that He sends No more than He helps us to bear. By his demise a wife mourns the loss of an affectionate husband and 10 children (two of whom were by his first wife) a loving and kind father. Capt Ben Rowe also leaves three brothers. For all much sympathy is felt. His end was peace. Far away in distant lands, There they laid his down to rest, Strangers soothed his dying bed, Crossed his arms upon his breast. Ah! his gentle spirit's fled Where his loving Saviour waits: In the place He has prepared, Safe within the pearly gates.

MINE CAPTAIN MEETS DEATH CAPTAIN JAMES ROWE VICTIM OF INJURIES RECEIVED AT NEW CLIFF SHAFT - FALL OF GROUND One of the most deplorable mine ac- cidents of the year occurred at the shaft of the New Cliff mine about 11 o'clock yesterday morning, resulting in the death of Captain James Rowe, one of the best known mining men in Ke- weenaw county. The victim was caught beneath some loose rock and sand and squeezed against the timbering of the shaft. The injuries which he sustained resulted in his death a few minutes later. The shaft of the New Cliff is only down about 127 feet, the overburden being so heavy and of such a nature as to make the sinking one of the most difficult undertakings ever attempted in the copper country. Under the di- rection of Captain Rowe, however, good progress was being made, the ledge having been entered about one weeks ago. On one of the sides of the shaft, about 100 feet from the surface, there was a "hole" behind the timbers, and Capt Rowe and three other men, two of whom were Richard and Gar- field Warren went underground yes- terday to fill this hole, while the shaft was idle. While the victim of the ac- cident was making an investigation on the spot the ground fell upon him, al- most without warning. His compan- ions gave him every assistance but his death resulted almost instantly. Capt Rowe was born at Cornwall, England, 31 years ago and leaves a mother and several brothers and sis- ters residing there. He came to Amer- ica eleven years ago, locating at Tam- arack where he worked for a short time. Since then he held positions at the Centennial, Gratiot and Cliff mines in the copper country and for a short time had charge of a salt mine near Buffalo, N.Y. He had been employed at the New Cliff mine since last Aug- ust. Besides his wife, three daughters survive him, Dorothy, Myrtle and Ethel May. The remains have been taken to the home of Mrs Phillip Lawry of Ah- meek. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday from the Centennial M. E. church, in charge of Rev I Wilcox. The members of Keweenaw Lodge, I O O F of Allouez, of which the de- ceased was a member will attend the funeral in a body. Justice Stephens of Ojibway was notified of the accident last evening [torn] the following jury: R [torn] Warren, Sr., Joseph [torn] nnant, Sr., David [torn] ank Baudry.
