25 Nancherrow Terrace St Just Penzance July 17th 1964 Dear Cousin We were pleased to hear that you feel so much better for your holiday in the old home town, & that you reached home safely. I wondered if you did some more gadding on the way. We are now getting some really hot weather, today seems overbearing, shame to say. Anyhow I am enclosing what information I can. My mother's father was John Hattam - her grand- father was a family name of which she cannot remember. I might find out later on. I asked Phylis Lawry if her grandfather Thomas Hattam had any brothers. She said her mother never spoke of any & she thinks he was the only child. Her mother of course was his daughter, she had sisters & brothers. They lived at Tregeseal The Hattams who lived at The Manor House, Cot Valley were:- Parents John & Mary 3 Boys - Will, John & Tom 3 Girls - Mary, Blanche & Greta. I think this is all I can do for you now. We may have a fortune left us yet. Who knows. My kind regards to you & your family Yours sincerely Cora Andrews

Text:
62 Churchill St Mont Albert E.10 Victoria Australia 8/11/53 Dear Henry, Thank you letter and your interest but I am afraid that I can do little to establish what relationship exists between us. As far as I know, in my father's family there were three sons and three daughters - William (father), Thomas & Henry, Mary, Blanch and Margretta. I think they lived at the Cot in St Just. Father was the only one of his family to come out here. Mary (Mrs Williams) remained in Cornwall and the rest migrated to South Africa. My father came to Australia when he was about 17 yrs, lived in Bendigo for many years and later married Annie Dallas. They had a family of three sons Harrie (died 1946), Gordon (self) and Wallace who is married and lives in Camberwell about 4 miles away. There was another family of Hattams, first cousins of father - Henry (one time mayor of Bendigo), Jack, Charity (Mrs Holdsworth), Laura, Ada and Ethel (Mrs Nicholls). Still another family who were second cousins of my father - John, Sam, William (always known as W. T.). This one had one son and four daughters one of whom, Olive, married my younger brother Wallace. So there we are. I am afraid I am not one of those people who are keen on family trees and know all the subtle relationships between this one and the rest, so I cannot decide any of the finer issues. Father went for a trip back to England in 1927 and stayed with his sister Mary for a while and returned via S Africa to see those still living Blanch (Mrs Davies I think) and Margretta. The other Hattam visiting England last year was Cliff (son of Sam) in the drapery business. It is a pity that when we were in England last year that we were unaware of your existence for we could have met and who knows we may even have unravelled the problem of our possible relationship. In any case it would have been nice to meet you. What a strange set of circumstances it was that led to Anne's meeting you! She has had a wonderful time in England this year and has fully enjoyed every minute of the time as well as gaining valuable experience in her profession. At present she is teaching in Brighton and will be there at least until the end of the year. I have been unduly tardy in answering your very interesting letter but that will now at least allow me to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Bright & Prosperous New Year. While we were in England we spent a week in Cornwall staying at a hotel in Falmouth and made many trips from there to most parts of Cornwall including Lands End, Penzance & St Just in Penwith and St Just in Roseland. We just loved the whole place but as I had no addresses we made no family contacts if there were any left to make but I doubt it. Well, all best wishes and kind regards to you all from us all Yours very sincerely Gordon D Hattam
