Shared note
Arrived Lyttleton 1st June 1874 from London where the Ballochmyle sailed 25 Feb 1874 "The Ballochmyle" in 1874. The ship was said to be admirably suited for the purpose, indeed a good boat in rough weather, with the berths in block systems in the fore & aft of the vessel. It had railway irons as ballast and the great weight of them caused it to shake so badly that in the 1st class cabins, chairs and tables were damaged, so the immigrant passengers would have been most uncomfortable. On top of that, the married women had no bathroom accommodation and the single women's plumbing of the bathroom and closet was a failure, with the taps and piping needing frequent repairs during the passage, and this bathroom and closet was shut up when in the tropics. "White Wings", says that there were 502 people on board when she left London on Feb 1874 under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company, her destination being Lyttleton. The emigrants came aboard at Plymouth and the ship took her departure from start point on March 4th. The Cape was rounded on 18th March and the Snares were passed on 27th May, the ship having taken 84 days from Plymouth. Port was reached on 1st June. There were 5 deaths & 3 births during the voyage. Lyttleton Times June 2 1874 states there were five deaths and three births, but the official report states four births and seven deaths on board, which came from the National Archives. Four of those deaths were from diarrhea, the ship was very crowded with 502 people on board. Two of the deaths were Dinah and James Wilsden. Dinah, aged 21, was very seasick and gave birth prematurely on the 6th March soon after they left Plymouth and she died of heart disease twelve days later. The baby, James, died of diarrhoea aged 27 days. Maybe these ones were not included in the newspaper report.
