The Sydney Morning Herald Thursday 5 February 1948 page 1 column 4 Husband, Wife Found Shot Dead GUNNEDAH, Wed- nesday.-Gordon Mitchell Penrose and his wife, Elsie Penrose, were found shot dead at the homestead on Mr. C. H. Newnham's property, Weroona, eight miles from Gunnedah, this morning. Penrose and his wife had recently sold a property in Texas, Queensland, and were living with Mr. Newnham. Police believe they were shot last Monday night. Detectives have learned that Mrs. Penrose had been receiv- ing medical treatment for seve- ral months. They think Pen- rose was shot with a .22 calibre rifle in his bed on the verandah and that Mrs. Penrose shot her- self inside the house. Mr. Newnham is absent on a holiday. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18059861

The Canberra Times Thursday 5 February 1948 page 3 column 5 TRAGEDY ON FARM AT WERRONGA TAMWORTH, Wednesday. Gordon Mitchell Penrose, 50, and his wife, Elsie were found dead in the house of C. Newman, at Werronga, eight miles from Gunnedah. They both died from wounds inflicted by a .22 rifle. The police believe that Penrose was shot first as the rifle was found beside the wife's body in an adjoining bedroom. Previously the Penroses had lived in Texas, Queensland, where they sold their property and came to live temporarily at the home of Newman, who is a bro- ther of Mrs. Penrose, and they were looking after the property while the owners were on holi- days. The body of Penrose was found on the front verandah while that of Mrs. Penrose was in the bed- room with the rifle alongside. They say that Mrs. Penrose first shot her husband and then shot herself by placing the rifle be- tween her knees and working the trigger with the big toe of one foot. She had been receiving medical treatment for some time. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2736852
