The Argus (Melbourne) Monday 22 October 1928 page 8 column 4 MALVERN BATHS OPENED In spite of light showers and a rather cold wind there was a good attendance of bathers on Saturday afternoon, when the Malvern muni- cipal baths were opened for the season. The mayor of Malvern (Councillor S. Hattam) and Councillor H. G. Wilmot (chairman of the baths committee) were present, but there was no formal opening ceremony. The baths, with tiled floor and sides looked very inviting, and many who had come merely to look on decided to make the plunge. Since the closing of last season many improvements have been made, including the widening of the paths round the baths. The gardens are in excellent order, and provide a picturesque background. The Argus (Melbourne) Tuesday 26 July 1932 page 6 column 6 OBITUARY. The death of Mr. John Hattam, J.P., occurred at his home in Preston yesterday. He was the founder of the firm of Hattam and Hattam, drapers, of Sale, Daylesford, and Northcote, who have been established in business for 60 years. Mr Hattam was born at St. Just, Cornwall, and he came to Australia in the sailing vessel Cham- pion of the Seas. He commenced business as a draper at Sale, and he frequently travelled by coach between that centre and Melbourne. While he was at Sale he took a leading part in bringing about the early closing of business houses in Gipps- land. Mr. Hattam was a colonist of 73 years. He leaves a widow and family of seven sons and one daughter. The funeral will take place on Wednesday, leaving his home at 2 o'clock for the Coburg Ceme- tery. The arrangements are being made by W. Samuel was the youngest son of John Hattam and his wife Ann (Nannie) Jenkin. By the age of 25, he was operating as a Draper at Walhalla, Vic., and later also became a Director of the Walhalla Gold Mine. Amelia was a Milliner before her marriage. When the gold rush ended in Walhalla around 1912, Samuel and his family moved to Malvern, Vic. where he joined his brothers operating drapery stores. Samuel later opened his own Drapery store in Carnegie, Victoria. Samuel served as a Councillor in the Shire of Malvern from 1921 and became the Mayor of Malvern in 1928/1929.
