OBITUARY.
 
The death of Mr. John Hattam, J.P.,
occurred at his home in Preston yesterday.
He was the founder of the firm of Hattam
and Hattam, drapers, of Sale, Daylesford,
and Northcote, who have been established
in business for 60 years. Mr Hattam was
born at St. Just, Cornwall, and he came
to Australia in the sailing vessel Cham-
pion of the Seas. He commenced business
as a draper at Sale, and he frequently
travelled by coach between that centre
and Melbourne. While he was at Sale he
took a leading part in bringing about the
early closing of business houses in Gipps-
land. Mr. Hattam was a colonist of 73
years. He leaves a widow and family of
seven sons and one daughter. The funeral
will take place on Wednesday, leaving his
home at 2 o'clock for the Coburg Ceme-
tery. The arrangements are being made
by W. G. Apps and Sons Pty. Ltd.
