Samuel was the youngest son of John Hattam and his wife Ann (Nannie) Jenkin.

By the age of 25, he was operating as a Draper at Walhalla, Vic., and later also became a Director of the Walhalla Gold Mine. Amelia was a Milliner before her marriage.

When the gold rush ended in Walhalla around 1912, Samuel and his family moved to Malvern, Vic. where he joined his brothers operating drapery stores. Samuel later opened his own Drapery store in Carnegie, Victoria. Samuel served as a Councillor in the Shire of Malvern from 1921 and became the Mayor of Malvern in 1928/1929.
